Which humidifier to choose for my growing area?

How to choose a humidifier based on the growing area and misting rate?

Maintaining an optimal humidity level is essential to ensure healthy and vigorous plant growth, whether in indoor cultivation, in a greenhouse, or in grow tent. The choice of humidifier mainly depends on the cultivation area and the misting flow rate, expressed in liters per hour (L/h).

In this article, we will help you choose the most suitable humidifier for your growing space, taking into account common dimensions such as 60x60 cm, 80x80 cm, 100x100 cm, 120x120 cm, and more.

1. Why is humidity essential in indoor cultivation?

Relative humidity directly influences plant metabolism. An insufficient humidity level can cause excessive evaporation, slowing growth and drying out the foliage. Conversely, excessively high humidity can promote fungal diseases and mold development.

The needs vary according to the development phase of the plants:

  • Germination and cuttings : 70-80 %
  • Vegetative growth : 50-70 %
  • Bloom : 40-50 %

To maintain these humidity levels, it is crucial to choose a humidifier suitable for the size of your tent or growing space.

2. What humidifier capacity to choose based on the area?

The output of a humidifier is measured in liters of mist generated per hour (L/h). Plus the space, the more powerful the humidifier needs to be. Here is a reference table of humidity needs based on the sizes of grow tents most commonly used:

Cultivation area Surface area (m²) Recommended flow rate (L/h)
60x60 cm 0.36 m² 0.3 to 0.8 L/h
70x70 cm 0.49 m² 0.5 to 1 L/h
80x80 cm 0.64 m² 1 to 2 L/h
90x90 cm 0.81 m² 1.5 to 2.5 L/h
100x100 cm (1m²) 1 m² 2 to 4 L/h
120x120 cm 1.44 m² 3 to 5 L/h
150x150 cm 2.25 m² 5 to 8 L/h
200x200 cm 4 m² 8 to 12 L/h
240x120 cm 2.88 m² 6 to 10 L/h
300x150 cm 4.5 m² 10 to 15 L/h
300x300 cm 9 m² 15 to 20 L/h
600x300 cm 18 m² 25 to 35 L/h and more

  • The larger the area, the more powerful the humidifier must be to ensure a homogeneous diffusion of humidity.
  • Below 120x120 cm, a ultrasonic humidifier is usually sufficient.
  • Starting from 150x150 cm, it is preferable to opt for an evaporative humidifier with a larger tank.
  • Beyond 4 m², industrial models are recommended to maintain stable humidity across the entire surface.

PS: If you are using a large space (300x150 cm or more), it is advisable to distribute several humidifiers rather than using a single one that is too powerful. This helps to avoid the formation of pockets of humidity and ensures better distribution throughout the cultivation.
